Life of the Buddha
Siddhartha Gautama, born around the 6th–5th century BCE in Lumbini (modern-day Nepal), was a prince of the Shakya clan. Despite growing up in luxury, he became aware of human suffering through encounters with sickness, aging, and death. At age 29, he renounced his royal life to seek a solution to suffering, practicing asceticism and meditation for six years. Eventually, under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, he attained full enlightenment, becoming the Buddha, or "Awakened One".
